This morning we’re running our electric machines in the Mill, which we drove miles to get to, in a petrol car. What a shambles. Luckily we offset double the carbon we produce. Ecologi is an organisation which creates impactful climate solutions by planting trees and supporting carbon reduction projects. We’ve been working with them for a couple of years now and have planted over 25,000 trees in that time, and offset over 100,000kg of CO₂! Keep reading to find out just how we’re offsetting all that carbon…
By working with Ecologi we’re supporting renewable energy projects such as wind farms in Mexico, Hydropower and Solar power plants in India, and Biomass power in Chile. This way we’re future-proofing the world’s energy supply and reducing the impact that our current means of energy production is having. This directly impacts atmospheric CO₂ levels and makes our planet a little bit healthier than it was.
Also through Ecologi we’re protecting and preserving forests across the world, from the Amazon in Brazil to the peat forests of Indonesia. In these forests millions of tonnes of CO₂ are stored, as well as more being absorbed every day, making them one of the most important aspects of our environment. Without these huge carbon sinks we would run out of clean air to breathe and many species would die out almost overnight. The biodiversity that these forests are home to is also of massive significance to the local communities - The Amazon is home to 10% of all known terrestrial species, and, on average, a new species is discovered every 3 days!
Finally, perhaps the most obvious means of offsetting carbon - planting trees. A single tree will absorb about 1 tonne of CO₂ every year - this is roughly the same amount of carbon produced by a return flight from Paris to New York. We make sure that for every single product we sell (whether this is a skein, tote bag, or pair of socks), we plant a tree. Since we started this pledge, we’ve grown a whole forest of 25,588 trees - and counting.
This is an example of just one of the ways we’re being climate positive - we also work with an organisation called 1% For the Planet which means we give 1% of our annual turnover to environmental non-profits to support their work in tackling our climate crisis.
We’re so grateful that we are privileged enough to be able to do everything that we do for the environment, but we’re always on the lookout for new ways to help as well. Being transparent about our carbon footprint is a priority to us and we hope that we can inspire others to do the same.
We’ve always liked to think of ourselves as planet-loving trailblazers, and here are the statistics to back it up.
