Some yarns sing in harmony. Others whisper back and forth. Marls? They do a little of both.

There’s something quietly enchanting about them - the way two (or more) colours twist together to become something entirely new. Not striped, not variegated. Just… marled. A subtle sort of magic.

So, what is a marl?

At its simplest, a marl is made by twisting (or plying) together two differently coloured strands of yarn. Each strand is usually a solid shade, but when they’re twisted into one, they create a beautiful dance of colour that shifts and flickers across your stitches.

Think of it like holding two yarns together, but already expertly plied into a single, balanced strand. It’s soft, smooth, and full of depth - without the hard lines or pooling of a stripe.

Why we keep coming back to them

There’s a sort of low-key drama to marled yarn. It elevates even the simplest stitch pattern into something with movement and richness, adding texture without fuss.

They’re perfect for knitters and makers who want something a bit more interesting than a flat solid, but not as bold or busy as a variegated. It’s the Goldilocks zone of colour.

Marls also shine in texture-heavy patterns - think moss stitch, ribbing, or garter - where that gentle interplay of colour makes the fabric feel alive. We do tend to steer clear of them in textures where the individual stitches need to sing, like cabling and brioche.

The Botanical Collection

We’ve always had a soft spot for marls, and this season gave us the perfect excuse to play.

Our new Botanical Collection is a set of four limited-edition colourways, each made by twisting two existing shades of Preseli together. Inspired by wild blooms and hedgerow greens, each marl evokes a different mood: soft Fern, dramatic Anemone, sunny Tansy, and moody Fritillaria.

Preseli’s already known for its buttery softness - a fingering weight blend of single-farm Polwarth from the Falklands and dark Hebridean from the UK - but these twists give it a whole new voice. Flecked, subtle, and quietly expressive.

We created them because… well, we missed Preseli a bit. Our usual range is a little smaller than normal while we work behind the scenes. So we gave ourselves (and you) a treat — and we’re so pleased with how they turned out.

Why not give a marl a go?

If you’ve never worked with a marled yarn before, this is a gentle, beautiful way in. The colours aren’t loud - they’re balanced, grounded, and soft - and they knit up into something that feels both classic and fresh.

They’re only here for a short time, but that’s half the fun.
A little spring fling with your needles.
