We make everything ourselves. Which means we make our own mistakes as well.

Somewhere between building a mill, figuring out how to spin in it, and learning what all the buttons do, we accidentally made a new yarn. The first of many.

We weren’t trying to make this particular blend. We picked up the wrong cone - one of those “I’ll just grab this one real quick” moments that spiralled into something we couldn’t undo. But once it was spun, we looked at the bobbins and thought... wait a minute. That’s actually quite lovely.

So here it is: Unruly.
The yarn we didn’t mean to make.
Unexpected. Undeniably lovely.

A skein of Garthenor Organic’s Unruly: Folly yarn — a one-of-a-kind DK weight wool in a marled grey and navy twist, resting on natural undyed cloth.

Introducing: Folly

The first batch in the Unruly range is a twist of three plies of Snowdonia Sock in Tomen, a rich mid-grey, and one ply of Preseli in Blazer, a deep navy blue. We were aiming for Preseli, but one misstep at the cone rack later, we ended up with something different - a bouncy, smooth, perfectly balanced marl in a soft DK weight.

We’re calling this colourway Folly. Seemed only fair.

The blend is just as eclectic as the twist:

  • The grey is 25% Hebridean and 75% Romney

  • The blue is 75% Polwarth and 25% Hebridean

It’s all been twisted with care, skeined properly, and fully labelled - no mysteries here, just a bit of beautiful mischief.

There are around 30 skeins of Folly available, all in 100g DK weight, and that’s it. There might be a few minis soon, but once it’s gone, it’s gone. That’s kind of the whole point.

Natural fibre doesn’t follow a pattern

Working with organic, single-origin wool means that nothing is ever truly predictable. From bale to bale, flock to flock, even hour to hour, the fibre changes - depending on the humidity, the temperature, or what kind of mood it’s in. You can follow the same recipe and still get a different result.

So when you start spinning it yourself - with no safety net - things happen. Things like Unruly.

We’ve learned a lot in our first year of running the mill. Mostly how easy it is to make the wrong thing - and how wonderful the wrong thing can turn out to be.

One-of-a-Kind (and Always Changing)

Unruly isn’t a range in the usual sense. There’s no shade card, no base list, and definitely no repeatable shades. Each batch will be entirely different - spun from the most recent mistake we’ve made in the mill. Some will be small, others a little bigger. Some might be subtly off; others gloriously unexpected.

Folly is the first. And it’s a true one-off. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. The next Unruly will look nothing like it. That’s the nature of doing it all ourselves. We’re still learning, and the yarn tells its own story.

For the knitter who likes a bit of a story

Unruly is for those of you who love yarn with a bit of a backstory. The renegades. The swatchers. The ones who love to see what happens when you cast on without a plan.

There’s nothing technically wrong with this yarn. It’s soft, smooth, bouncy and beautifully spun. It’s just not what we meant to make.

It’s the same quality, sustainability and honesty you expect from us - just in a yarn you wouldn’t.

Each Unruly batch will be a total one-off. No repeats. No recipes. No guarantees. But if you fancy knitting something with a little chaos - Unruly’s for you.

Go on. Have a Folly.
